Sweat Lodge at Well Read
Sunday 25th May 2025
Build Workshop 10am-1pm
Sweat Lodge 6-9pm
The Sweat Lodge is an ancient ceremony of purification and community holding. Combining traditional elements in a deep alchemical experience inherited in this time from the First People of the Americas.
During this year's Well Read literary festival at Wasing, experience this ancient ritual, held by Geoff Greentree, who has been holding Sweat Lodges for several decades.
Geoff incorporates his extensive knowledge of health, nutrition, symbolism and ceremony into the Lodge experience.
Geoff believes that the ancient technology of the Sweat Lodge is an essential tool for all cultures, particularly useful for sharing our prayers, aspirations and aligning us to nature and to our own essential nature. For releasing the old, creating space to vision the new in our lives.
On Sunday 25th May 2025 from 10am-1pm Geoff will be holding a workshop to build the lodge, sharing his knowledge and explaining the process.
The Sweat Lodge itself will take place later that day, from 6pm-9pm.
A low dome-like structure built out of hazel, ash or willow saplings, covered with blankets and with a small pit at its centre is our Lodge. A large fire is built nearby, heating up rocks which are then placed in the centre of the Lodge.
Participants enter, the door is closed and water poured onto the rocks.
Participants can be semi-naked or naked as they wish, the Lodge is a sacred respectful space, an opportunity to relax into safety around cultural body issues.
There will be four rounds or “doors” representing the traditional four directions and attributes when more hot rocks will brought into the Lodge.
So we journey around the “Medicine Wheel” experiencing aspects of self and archetype.
There will be songs, prayers, affirmations, sharing, a chance to release and remember our common humanity in the heat and darkness. Using sound and stillness to connect to our deeper selves, then to celebrate this commonality we all share.
The Lodge represents the womb into which we return to be reborn, refreshed and clearer.
The Lodge and fire are created in a specific traditional way which Geoff will explain in detail during the construction module and a little at the beginning of the Lodge itself.
You are welcome to book on to either the build, or the Lodge, or to attend both.
